Plumas County VOAD is an umbrella for the volunteers, non-profit organizations, and government partners who support disaster response. VOAD stands for Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, and we live by the "Four C's" of disaster response:

• Cooperation - Working together to overcome challenges
• Coordination - Using resources to help communities prepare and recover
• Communication - Developing and maintaining effective channels for sharing information
• Collaboration - Identifying common goals and creating shared solutions

Emergency Food Access Plan

In 2025 and 2026, we organized a project to organize and update information in our county to ensure people don't go hungry during the first phases of a disaster. Ali Flagler and Paul Mrowczynski of the Dawn Institute secured a grant to survey a four-county area and develop a plan that we could implement during a disaster. They have been building support and intelligence across the region and are ready to share their progress toward developing a plan that can go to the County Board of Supervisors. One feature of the plan is to develop letters of support from all kinds of groups—farmers, schools, churches, clubs, etc.—that outline where our county's resources are located and how to access them. We've developed a resource list from these letters of support that we'll share at the meeting.

We want to add more resources! If you are a representative from a community organization or business or you're just an individual with food-related resources, please join our meeting on Wednesday and join in.

Wildfire Preparedness Home Visits

This past weekend, many members of our communities came together to learn from CalFire's Defensible Space experts on how to visit homeowners and educate them about the defensible space requirements that apply to most residents of Plumas County. According to a new Stanford University Structure Assessment, nearly 18,000 structures in Plumas County are in Very High and High wildfire hazard zones. That's 93% of all our buildings in the county! Our trained volunteers, who represent Firewise communities, the Plumas Fire Safe Council, Homeowners Associations, and Fire Protection Districts, will be able to meet with anyone interested in improving their resilience and identify the specific steps you can take on your property to reduce risk.
